Congratulations to the student engineering team at the University of North Florida. The team is the only U.S. university team among the top 10 finalists in the Freescale Technology Forum Design Challenge. The UNF team comprises senior electrical engineering students Kelvin LeBeaux, Dangkhoa Ly and Southside resident Harold Lugo. UNF electrical engineering professor Dr. Chiu Choi is faculty advisor for the team.
The team’s design is a gas-saving water injection fuel controller, which tricks a vehicle into using less fuel. This device is protected under U.S. patents and copyrights and is the first of its kind.
Freescale selected 10 finalists from a field of 65 participants, consisting of embedded systems developers and engineering students representing Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Colombia, Mexico and the United States. Each submission was judged on creativity, design efficiency, technical complexity, number of Freescale devices used, and overall application innovation to improve the environment.
Each of the 10 finalists received a $1,000 award, a professional CodeWarrior(R) development platform and a video camera to capture their design building experience. Finalists will submit prototypes for the Freescale Technology Forum Americas in June to be held in Orlando, where the top five winners will be announced.
UNF has increased visibility in the national collegiate community. It’s been listed as a top college buy by national publications and consistently brings leading intellectuals, performers and public figures to the Northeast Florida community.
