Hannaford has posted an official notice on the company Website about a data breach that led to the theft of credit and debit card numbers. Floridians are among those affected because Sweetbay Supermarkets in The Sunshine State are part of Hannaford. The official announcement says, "The stolen data was limited to credit and debit card numbers and expiration dates, and was illegally accessed from our computer systems during transmission of card authorization. The intrusion affected Hannaford stores, Sweetbay stores in Florida and certain independently-owned retail locations in the Northeast that carry Hannaford products."
The company advises customers to carefully review financial institution and credit card statements, and immediately contact the credit card company or issuing bank with any questions or concerns about individual charges.
For more information or with questions, consumers may also call Hannaford's Customer Information Center at 866-591-4580.
A story at Reuters says a computer hacker breached security and approximately 2,000 cases of fraud are connected to the breach.
Every time I read something like this, I swear to start back using checks. But the truth is we're all hooked on the convenience of plastic and speed swipe. One precaution I do take is paying for credit monitoring whereby the credit company notifies me if there's an increase (I pick the amount) on any of my accounts, or if there's a new account.
Do you know anyone affected by this? Email me.
